hotels in costa rica mountain hotels costa ricaPoas Volcano Lodge lies between the Poás and Barva Volcanoes at 1900m above sea level on the ridge dividing the Atlantic and Pacific zones of the country. The Lodge is nestled into rolling pastures at the foothills of the Poás Volcano, with one of the world’s largest active craters. The impressive views from the Lodge include not only the volcano and its various cones, but also the western area of the spectacular Braulio Carrillo National Park, as well as the Caribbean plains. Poas Volcano Lodge is just a few metres from the nearest protected sub-tropical cloud forest area, through which we have designed a network of trails for visitors to explore. The Lodge is situated inside a working dairy farm which was built up by the British family who bought the land in 1970, and still own both farm and Lodge.

The unique architecture and the design of the Lodge carried features from English cottages, Welsh farm houses, American ranches, combined with details of local craftsmanship. Built on different levels, with rough stone walls, wooden beamed ceilings, dramatic arches and tasteful interior decoration, this combination contributed to the very warm and welcoming atmosphere of what was a family home and is now a Mountain Lodge. However an earthquake in January 2009, severely damaged the building; but it has been reconstructed very imaginatively, with a design from one of Costa Rica’s new generation of architects, keeping much of the old whilst adding many new and interesting features. All damaged parts of the old house have been recycled into the new, and huge amounts of native oak felled in the reconstruction of the roads alongside the farm, have been incorporated into the building.
